How to introduce your kindergartner to his or her first summer camp
April 21 2014
Getting your kindergartner ready for a first summer camp experience can be fun and exciting. Your child is about to embark on a new journey that can help them build communication skills, self-confidence, a love for nature, and perhaps friendships that may last beyond the summer.
However, for your kindergartner’s first summer camp experience, there are many things you can do to prepare them for a successful experience.
Getting your child ready for summer camp
Here are a few tips for preparing your child for his or her first summer camp:
● Have a pre-camp conversation: Take the time to have a conversation with your child about what to expect from summer camp and share your excitement about the new things he or she will get to experience. This will help prepare your child mentally for the change in environment and in activities.
● Do not forget to pack sunscreen: This is a critical item for young children to have on hand. Children are outside often at summer camp and their delicate skin must be protected.
● Introduce your child to the camp leaders: If your child is shy or has trouble with new people, then introduce him or her to the director at the start of the camp. Children with attachment issues may have a more difficult time at summer camp, but an introduction to the camp leaders can help put him or her at ease.
