Back to school tips: How to manage your child’s transition from preschool to kindergarten
August 11 2014
If your child is starting kindergarten this year, you may be wondering what the new year will entail. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academies, we want to help you make the transition as easy as possible, so we have compiled a list of tips to help you manage this time as best you can.
Managing the transition to kindergarten:
● Recognize and understand your child’s specific learning needs. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to learning. You may notice that your child is a visual learner, or an auditory learner, or learns best through some other method. Be sure to provide this information to the teacher.
● Ensuring your child is equipped with the right skills for this specific time is also important. By the time a child is ready to begin kindergarten, the child should be able to recognize letters, such as in a name, or recall a story. If your child has these simple skills, it may be an indication of the readiness to move to the next level of education.
● Know which types of activities excite your child and which types are more frustrating. Share this information with your child’s teachers and keep an ongoing list of different activities you have experimented with.
● Before kindergarten begins, arrange playgroups so your child has the chance to work on social skills. A large part of kindergarten involves interacting with peers, so introducing your child to playgroups and playdates is beneficial.
